Capela do Divino Espírito Santo - Paredes de Coura / Riding Portugal

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

It was on one of those days when time seems to stand still that I arrived in the small Portuguese village of Paredes de Coura, not for a long visit, but to lose myself for a few moments in one of the most charming corners of the village, the area around the Capela do Divino Espírito Santo. The sun peeked for a few moments through the clouds that filled the sky, casting soft shadows on the ground below, and a discreet, almost timid breeze spread the pure, humid air of the surrounding vegetation, one of the main reasons why so many people travel to this part of the country.

This place has something special, perhaps because it is a little away from the hustle and bustle of the center, despite being a very calm and peaceful center, perhaps because of the way nature blends with the heritage, or simply because of the feeling of tranquility that welcomes us as soon as we arrive here, because time runs slower there, it seems to me :)

PT

The Chapel of the Divine Holy Spirit, dating from the 18th century, is small in size but enormous in symbolism. It is the headquarters of the largest brotherhood in Portugal, the Real Confraria do Divino Espírito Santo, a detail that reinforces the spiritual and cultural importance of this space. The simple white building stands out elegantly among the green and stone tones that surround it.

What really enchanted me, however, was the "empire" style staircase, lined with well-tended flowerbeds and ornate fountains, leading up to the 19th century granite double-sided cross. It is impossible not to associate it with the great staircases of northern Portugal, such as the staircase of Bom Jesus do Monte, in Braga, or that of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, in Lamego, but here on a smaller, closer, almost familiar scale. You feel it was designed with the same care and reverence, but adapted to the size and rhythm of the village.

It was sitting there, in the middle of the stairs, with my cell phone in my hand researching what else to visit nearby, perhaps the Coura River, perhaps some hidden viewpoint, that I witnessed a small episode as simple as it was beautiful.

PT

An elderly man, his face marked by time and work in the fields, calmly climbed the steps with his hands behind his back. He wore a flannel shirt and black beret, like something out of an old black-and-white portrait. On the opposite side, a young foreign couple got off, backpack on their backs and map in their hands, exchanging words in French.

They met right there in front of me, halfway up the stairs. The man stopped for a moment, smiled and pointed with his cane to the top of the chapel. The boy thanked him in improvised Portuguese with a strong French accent, and the old man responded with the same kindness: That's from Espírito Santo, it gives strength to those who climb :)
We all laughed simultaneously :) the gesture was brief, but full of meaning. An exchange of glances, a mutual thank you, an unlikely encounter between worlds, united by that piece of stone and faith.

PT

Paredes de Coura is, for many, synonymous with music and its famous festival. But there is much more to be discovered in this village, and the Capela do Divino Espírito Santo with its serene staircase is one of these hidden gems.
There, among ancient fountains and the scent of fresh nature, you feel that each stone has a lot of history to tell. Maybe it doesn't take much more than sitting for a few minutes, listening to the wind, watching those passing by and letting your soul slow down too.
It was just a moment, but full of light memories. And that's when the best trips come about.

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health
