Argentina - Spending the night at Caminante Lagoon in Ushuaia: would you camp with a stranger? / Pasando la noche en la Laguna del Caminante en Ushuaia: ¿acamparías con un desconocido? 😅❤️

It took us four hours to walk the 16 km from the trailhead to the Caminante Lagoon in Ushuaia. This trek was of medium difficulty in my opinion, but the fact of walking with a loaded backpack added some extra difficulty. The good thing was that this weight translated into having a shelter and shelter for the night, where we could ‘rest’ until the next day, when we would have to walk the same distance but on the way back. That was the first and only time I camped during my stay at the end of the world, because I was so cold that I didn't feel like repeating the experience 😂.

Cuatro horas tardamos para recorrer los 16 km que nos separaban del inicio del sendero hasta la Laguna del Caminante en Ushuaia. Este trekking fue de dificultad media en mi opinión, pero el hecho de caminar con la mochila cargada agregó algo de dificultad extra. Lo bueno fue que ese peso se tradujo en tener un refugio y abrigo para pasar la noche, en el cual pudimos "descansar" hasta el día siguiente, en donde deberíamos caminar la misma distancia pero de regreso. Esa fue la primera y única vez que acampé durante mi estadía en el fin del mundo, porque pasé tanto frío que no me dieron ganas de repetir la experiencia 😂.

The trek to this place is one of the most beautiful treks to do with a night camping in between. This is the only place in Ushuaia where free camping is explicitly allowed. For me, the possibility to go camping there came up on the spur of the moment, when I heard that a group of hostel guests were going to go. Thinking that there would be a lot of us, I joined the trip and brought my own tent, but in the end, there were only two of us on the whole trip. All of us in this so-called ‘group’ had started the trek at the wrong time, but we never met, not even once at the lagoon.

El trekking a este lugar es uno de los más lindos para hacerlo con una noche de acampe en el medio. Este es el único sitio en Ushuaia donde está explícitamente permitido el acampe libre. Para mí, la posibilidad de ir a acampar ahí surgió improvisadamente, cuando escuché que un grupo de huéspedes del hostel iba a ir. Pensando que seríamos muchos, me uní a la travesía y llevé mi propia carpa, pero al final, solo terminamos siendo dos personas en todo el recorrido. Todos los de ese supuesto "grupo" habíamos empezado el camino a destiempo, pero nunca nos encontramos, ni siquiera una vez en la laguna.

I had got to know my companion that day a little better while we were trekking. We had not had the opportunity to share time in the hostel because he had arrived the same morning he had set out on this trek. He was a very nice person and very prepared for camping, much more so than me at least, who only had a tent, a sleeping bag and a borrowed roll of insulation. He had his own things to cook in nature and he shared them with me: we were able to enjoy a luxury menu of noodles with sauce in front of a beautiful landscape.

A mi acompañante de ese día lo había conocido un poco más mientras hacíamos el trekking. No habíamos tenido la oportunidad de compartir tiempo en el hostel porque él había llegado la misma mañana en la que se propuso hacer esta caminata. Era una persona muy agradable y muy preparada para los campamentos, mucho más que yo al menos, que solo tenía una carpa, una bolsa de dormir y un rollo aislante prestado. Él tenía sus cosas para cocinar en la naturaleza y las compartió conmigo: pudimos disfrutar un menú de lujo de fideos con salsa frente a un paisaje hermoso.

But something awkward happened when it was time to go to sleep. Everyone had their own space to sleep, as this outing was organised individually. In my case, I had a two-person tent, in which I had plenty of space for both of us. In his case, he planned to sleep in his bivouac, as he always did. I had no idea what that was, but I assumed it would be fine. The truth is that even though we could have both slept in the tent peacefully, I couldn't bring myself to invite him to sleep there. I felt a bit bad, but I didn't feel comfortable camping with someone I had only shared a few hours with. What would you have done in my place?

Pero algo incómodo sucedió al momento de tener que ir a dormir. Cada uno tenía su espacio para dormir, ya que esta salida estaba organizada individualmente. En mi caso, yo tenía una carpa para dos personas, en la cual tenía mucho espacio para ambos. En su caso, él tenía planeado dormir en su "vivac", como hacía siempre. Yo no tenía ni idea de lo que era eso, pero supuse que estaría bien. La verdad es que a pesar de que podríamos haber dormido los dos en la carpa tranquilamente, en ningún momento me animé a invitarlo a dormir ahí. Me sentí un poco mal, pero no me sentía cómoda acampando con alguien que apenas había compartido unas horas. ¿Ustedes qué habrían hecho en mi lugar?

As night approached, I was already too cold and went to bed earlier than he did, so I had not seen what his ‘bivouac’ consisted of. I only found out the next morning when I woke up and saw something like a scene from CSI. He had a sleeping bag which he had wrapped with insulation and covered with waterproof plastic. I was surprised how he can sleep there, but he said that with the combination of thermal clothing and all that arrangement, he has slept in places even colder than that. As for me, I had brought a bag and two blankets to sleep in, and although I slept with my jacket on, the cold got the better of me and it took me a while to fall asleep.

Cuando se acercó la noche, yo ya tenía demasiado frío y me fui a acostar más temprano que él, por lo que no había visto en que consistía su "vivac". Lo descubrí recién a la mañana siguiente, cuando me desperté y ví algo parecido a una escena de CSI. Él tenía una bolsa de dormir la cual envolvía con un aislante y a su vez lo cubría con un plástico impermeable. Me sorprendió como puede dormir ahí, pero él dijo que con la combinación de ropa térmica y todo ese arreglo, ha dormido en lugares incluso más fríos que ese. Por mi parte, yo había llevado para dormir una bolsa y dos frazadas, y a pesar de que dormí hasta con la campera puesta, el frío pudo más y tardé un buen rato en poder conciliar el sueño.

Camping at the Caminante Lagoon was a good experience for both of us, and I was glad that neither of us froze to death in the process. I enjoyed learning what a bivouac is and found it a good way to trek lightly, without having to carry the weight of a tent. The next day I felt a bit guilty about not sharing my tent with my companion, but he woke up with more energy than I did so I guess it was no bother to him. The other half of the trek awaited us, much more demanding than the first, for which we were more than ready 😃.

Acampar en la Laguna del Caminante fue una buena experiencia para ambos, y me alegré de que ninguno se haya congelado del todo en el proceso. Me gustó saber lo que es un vivac y me pareció una buena forma de hacer trekking ligero, sin tener que acarrear el peso de una carpa. Al día siguiente me sentí un poco culpable por no haber compartido mi carpa con mi acompañante, pero él se despertó con más energía que yo así que supongo que no fue molestia para él. Y nos esperaba la otra mitad de la caminata, mucho más exigente que la primera, para lo que ya estábamos más que listos 😃.
